Partial hospitalization

How does a partial hospitalization program work?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) works as a structured treatment day: you spend several hours at the program on each treatment day and go home afterward. For substance use, PHP is ASAM Level 2.5 care with at least 20 hours of clinical services each week.

What a PHP week includes

Virginia Medicaid’s rule for Level 2.5 partial hospitalization lists what a covered program must include:

  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Individual and group psychotherapy and substance use disorder counseling
  • Medication management and education groups
  • Family involvement in assessment, treatment, and continuing care
  • Motivational interviewing and engagement strategies
  • Medication-assisted treatment, on site or through referral

How you start

PHP begins with an assessment. Under the ASAM Criteria, the assessment looks at six areas of your life, from withdrawal risk and physical health to your recovery environment and your own preferences, to recommend a level of care.

How it ends

Your team reviews your progress as you go. When you no longer need daily structure, you step down to a less intensive level of outpatient care, such as intensive outpatient (9 to 19 hours a week under ASAM).
