VASAP Assessment & Counseling

VASAP is the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program. Local ASAPs provide probationary oversight for people referred by a court, most often after a DUI conviction, and the Code of Virginia requires people convicted of DUI to enroll in and complete an ASAP.

After intake, your ASAP case manager either schedules you for ASAP education classes or directs you to choose a treatment provider from an approved directory, who assesses whether treatment is needed. If treatment is required, it must be completed to meet your ASAP requirements.

Substance use assessments, individual and group counseling, treatment recommendations, progress monitoring, court- and VASAP-compliant documentation, coordination with your VASAP case manager (with signed consent), and completion reports. Your ASAP case manager can confirm which treatment providers your local ASAP accepts.

According to the Commission on VASAP, ASAP probation typically matches the period of license suspension: usually one year for a first offense and three years for second and later offenses. You stay on ASAP probation until that period ends, even after classes or treatment are finished.

The Commission on VASAP lists a standard ASAP fee of $300 plus a $100 intervention fee. Treatment is separate: people who need a treatment assessment and treatment pay the treatment provider directly. Contact us to talk through coverage and costs for your situation.
