VASAP

How long is VASAP in Virginia?

VASAP in Virginia usually lasts as long as your license suspension: typically one year for a first offense and three years for a second or later offense, according to the Commission on VASAP. You stay on ASAP probation until that period ends, even if your classes or treatment finish sooner.

The timeline from conviction

  • Report to the ASAP within 15 days of your conviction or court order. The Code of Virginia requires it.
  • At enrollment you are assigned a case manager, and an intake appointment is scheduled.
  • If you are classified for education, classes start within 60 days of intake. They total 10 hours: two-hour sessions once a week for five weeks.
  • If you are classified for a treatment assessment, a treatment provider decides whether you need treatment.

If treatment is required

The provider develops a treatment plan you must follow and keeps your ASAP case manager informed of your progress. Treatment must be completed to meet your ASAP requirements, and you also complete a four-session ASAP treatment education class.

Does pre-enrollment count?

Pre-enrollment time before your conviction does not count toward probation, which starts on the date the court order is signed. You do get credit for any classes you attended.
